Thorium is the new source of energy which was already discovered in 1828 and was named after the God Thor, the God of thunder and strength. Thorium was never used since fossils were in those days opted for; in the 1950’s when nuclear energy as a source of energy was initiated.
The energy created by splitting the Thorium is comparable to the energy created with for example Uranium.
Thorgenx choose for Thorium for the following reasons:
Thorium creates a bundle of energy which is comparable with Uranium but does not have the fossil or nuclear side or effects. For example CO2 emission or a possible meltdowns will not occur with the use of Thorium.
The Thorium fuel rods (or Thorium-based nuclear fuel elements) for commercial reactor use were manufactured for the “Indian Point 1” reactor in New York, USA, in 1962. This was the first commercial power reactor to utilize Thorium as a fertile material.
Built on this foundation, modern tests were done by the Norwegian company “Thor Energy AS” in 2013 and Thorium-based fuel rods were manufactured by the Norwegian “Institute for Energy Technology” (IFE), which operated the “Halden research reactor”.
The Particle Accelarator is based on the inventions of Prof. Peter Wade Higs, with the Large Hadron Collider at Cern, Switzerland in the 1950’s.
There are more than 30.000 particle accelerators active in the world. With this proven technology we have chosen to split the Thorium to generate 300 MW thermal energy and generate 100MW electrical energy with the power plant. The remaining heat can be used in for example the heating of cities or ports.
We have chosen for this 100 MW option enabling to create a solution which is widely scalable and ready for use in various communities and industries and the most effective configuration of an accelerator with a 300MW reactor.
The Lead Cooled Reactor was developed in the 1950’s and widely used in naval applications like for example submarines which were in fact the first Small Modular Reactors (SMR’s). Thorgenx is such a SMR which with the Lead Cooled Reactor collects the bundle of energy created by the split of the Thorium by means of the Particle Accelarator and generates the heat for producing steam in the steam turbine.
Knowing the advantages and disadvantages from lead over molten salt cooled, Thorgenx has chosen for lead cooled.
The steam turbine converts the thermal energy and drives the 100MW generator. The steam turbine was developed already in the beginning of the 19th century by both Siemens and ABB. Nowadays they are standard off the shelf and developed towards an excellent quality and reliability.
With this solution we chose for a realistic feasible configuration which meets all the challenges related to the use of the Particle Accelerator in combination with Thorium and the Lead Cooled Reactor.
